Punta Ala (formerly Punta Troia) is located north of Castiglione della Pescaia , in the Gulf of Follonica. Punta Ala is a famous seaside resort which lies on the northern slopes of promontory of the same name. The sailing regattas and the highly equipped marina have always been the main attractions of Punta Ala. The Golf Club Punta Ala, opened in 1964, is famous for the wonderful panoramic views over the Gulf of Follonica. The 18 holes represent various levels of difficulty making the course ideal for everyone from beginners to scratch players. History Previously known as Punta Troia, changed its name to punta ala (from aviation jargon) due to the great Italian aviator Italo Balbo, who had purchased some fortifications and villas in the area which later became his residences. The modern tourist center developed during the course of the twentieth century, particularly in the'70s. Punta Ala is a tourist destination of elites in every season, thanks to its luxury residences, second homes and boats moored at the port. Monuments While presenting itself as a modern, functional and exclusive beach resort, Punta Ala was placed on the border between the Principality of Piombino in the north and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to the south. The Hidalgo Tower, overlooking the modern town, was built during the sixteenth century to defend the far end of the southern principality of Piombino . Il Castello di Punta Ala (The Punta Ala castle), also was built in the sixteenth-century by the Medici on the headland to the south-east of the site for the control of the north coast of Castiglione della Pescaia. The Appiani Tower was built by its name sake to further enhance the defense system of the principality.

Punta Ala Beaches Punta Ala has two main beaches to visit. The first is at the end of the tourist port. You can reach it walking towards the Balbo Villa. You can also swim to the Sparviero Island from this beach. The second beach runs down Via della Dogana, between the Hidalgo Tower and Cala. You can reach it either on foot from the port or by car. The beach is almost s 2 kilometres long.

The area around Punta Ala has lovely sandy beaches, such as Cala Violina and Cala Martina. The Cala Violina and Cala Martina coves keep being voted as some of Italy's best beaches. The coves can only be reached by walking or cycling. The track is extremely scenic. You will walk predominantly through one of the most spectacular Tyrrhenian coastal stretches.

The Golf Club Punta Ala, opened in 1964, is famous for the wonderful panoramic views over the Gulf of Follonica. The course has an overall length of 6168 meters with a PAR 72, with light and natural undulations of the ground. The 18 holes represent various levels of difficulty making the course ideal for everyone from beginners to scratch players, and are situated in the middle of the evergreen landscape made by pine trees, cork trees, ancient holms and oak trees.
