Roses in the Vineyard

In the Montalcino area, you'll frequently see roses planted along the edge of vineyards. Traditionally they've served as an early warning system to protect the grapevines — the equivalent of a miner's canary.
Studies on garden roses and roses planted at the end of vineyard rows indicated substantial recruitment of rose leafhoppers and Anagrus spp. during September-November. Roses appear to be a good overwintering habitat for Anagrus spp. and may be an attractive cultural option for wine grape growers to improve biological control of leafhoppers.

And they're beautiful.

Tenuta di Sesta is located between Sant'Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell'Abate, near the well-known Romanesque Abbey of Sant'Antimo. Sesta derives from a "sesta" milestone where the Parish Church of Saint Mary of Sexta once stood along the ancient road from Roselle to Chiusi. The first bottles of Brunello were produced by Giuseppe Ciacci, father of the current owner, Giovanni, in 1966, the year in which Brunello was first recognized as D.O.C. At the time, there were only twelve bottlers and, for this reason, the Sesta Estate is deemed as one of the historical estates in the territory of Montalcino.
Tenuta di Sesta extends over approximately 200 hectares dedicating 30 ha to its vineyards. Of these, 13.5 ha are registered as D.O.C.G. for the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The grape type is Sangiovese Grosso (known as "Brunello") which is used to obtain Brunello and Rosso. Cabernet Franc and Merlot yield grapes used to produce a red wine, Il Poggio d'Arna.
