The Sagra del Tordo, revived and formalized in 1957, is separated into two major events. The first being the Sagra del Tordo, Festival of the Thrush, taking place on the last Sunday of October and the second being the Apertura delle Cacce, the Opening of the Hunting Season, on the second Sunday of August.
Every season has its own charm, but Autumn is definitely one of the best times to come to Tuscan. October and November mean olive harvest, truffle hunting, mushrooms and chestnuts.. The famous festival Sagra del Tordo and the Torneo di Apertura are two colourful festivals held each year in Montalcino. The Festival of the Thrush, taking place on the last Sunday of October, is the biggest and most important festival for Montalcino in which the entire population is involved. The festivities include food, dance and celebration that culminate in the challenge of a primitive archery competition. The Sunday Archer’s Tournament is the key event of the Sarga del Tordo medieval festival. The Archers tournament takes place Sunday afternoon. Two archers from each of the four Montalcino districts (Pianello, Travaglio, Ruga, Borghetto) participate in it.
