Montalcino and its wines | Brunello di Montalcino Wine Region Guide

The quiet Tuscan village of Montalcino has undergone few changes since medieval times, when it was a stronghold pertaining to the nearby city of Siena. Montalcino was once a strategic point along the road to Rome and offers a panoramic view of the beautiful Asso, Orcia and Ombrone valleys. The town’s fame derives from its production of one of Italy’s finest red wines known as Brunello di Montalcino.
Brunello, roughly translated as "nice dark one" in the local dialect, is the unofficial name of the clone of Sangiovese (also known as Sangiovese Grosso grown in the Montalcino region. Brunello di Montalcino was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status.

Italy has been producing wines for about 3500 years. But Brunello di Montalcino can be considered a modern invention. It is the result of the studies of a single winemaker, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi. In the mid 1800s, a local farmer named Clemente Santi isolated certain plantings of Sangiovese vines in order to produce a 100% varietal wine that could be aged for a considerable period of time. Around 1870, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi began to set out in his vineyards a clone of the Sangiovese variety known as Brunello. The young viticulturist had noted that a subvariety of Sangiovese, referred to as Grosso to distinguish it from the breed that had originated in the Chianti area and that produced smaller berries, was more resistant to attacks by phylloxera, which was then ravaging the vineyards of the district. In the end, Biondi-Santi completely replanted his vineyards and was soon able to produce an entirely satisfactory wine made from a single variety.

The Brunello di Montalcino has to age for 50 months in wood barrels. In order to be able to have on the lable the nomination "Riserva" the wine has to age at least five years in the wood barrels. The red wine Rosso di Montalcino only has to age for about 10 months.

In addition to Brunello di Montalcino, producers in the Montalcino region can produce wine under Rosso di Montalcino, Sant'Antimo and Moscadello di Montalcino DOCs as well as the generic Indicazione geografica tipica designation of Toscana IGT. The Rosso di Montalcino DOC was established in 1984 as a means of giving Brunello di Montalcino producers the flexibility to continue the tradition of long aging of the region's flagship wine. Rosso di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese grown in the same delineated region as Brunello di Montalcino. However, the wine is required to spend only six months aging in oak and 1 year total aging before release.

The temple of Brunello

On 9 July 2021, Tempio del Brunello was inaugurated, an 'immersive and emotional journey to discover the renowned wine and its history'. In the relentless pursuit of profit, the Temple has forsaken the authenticity and reverence owed to this revered wine and cultural background. It stands not as a bastion of enological appreciation but as a hollow shell, a monument to the commercialization of tradition, where substance is sacrificed at the altar of superficial spectacle.

Podere Santa Pia, located 34 kms south of Montalcino, is the perfect base for private wine and food tasting tours with visits to excellent wineries and organic farms. Some are within walking distance, others are within easy reach by car.

Built over an ancient Etruscan settlement, Pieve San Felice in Pincis dedicated to the martyred San Felice da Nola and was already cited in the 10th century as one of the area’s most venerable churches. Probably Romanesque in origin, it was re-structured in 1705, with other alterations made before 1900 (particularly the campanile).
San Felice’s investment in Montalcino dates back to the early 1980s, with the acquisition of the Campogiovanni property on the southwest slope of the hill on which Montalcino lies, a location ideally subject to the positive effects of mild breezes from off the Mediterranean.

Castello Romitorio | Localita' Romitorio, 279, 53024 Montalcino - Siena
www.castelloromitorio.com

Castello Romitorio, a massive twelfth-century hilltop fortress in Montalcino, since 1986 has produced exquisite Tuscan wines, grappa, and olive oil. Castello Romitorio was founded by reknowned artist Sandro Chia, in 1984. The castle was previously owned by the Baron Giorgio Franchetti. The current structure was originally designed in the thirteen-hundreds as a fortress to defend the city of Montalcino. Sandro Chia bought the 12th century Castello Romitorio in 1984 and turned it into a vineyard. He constructed a cellar on the ground floor and installed up-to-date winemaking equipment. Sandro Chia's first wine, Romito del Romitorio was bottled in 1984. Recently, Chia hired oenologist Carlo Ferrini to oversee the winemaking. Because Sandro’s paintings appear on most of the estate's wine labels, each bottle is a work of art.
Sandro Chia, among others, formed the Italian movement Transavanguardia ("beyond avant-garde"). Transavanguardia was a reaction against the art of the 70's which was conceptual and minimalist; it brought on a return of pure enjoyment of painting, drawing on various artistic influences, and producing large-scale figurative paintings.
Wines produced are Brunello di Montalcino Castello Romitorio, Rosso di Montalcino DOC Castello Romitorio and Romito del Romitorio Castello Romitorio.
Castello Romitorio recently acquired an estate in the L'Aquilia region of Scansano. The estate, named Ghiaccio Forte after an ancient Etruscan city whose ruins lie meters from the vineyard's cantina, occupies an imposing hill and ten hectares of vineyards. The grapes utilized in the Morellino di Scansanoare a blend of Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, and Syrah.

Ciacci Piccolomini d’ Aragona vineyards, property of the family Bianchini, are located in the south, south-west side of Montalcino tuscany at an altitude between 240 and 360 mt above sea level.
The modern history of the winery Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona- ownership of several generations of families Ciaccia and Piccolomini - began with 1985, when Giuseppe Bianchini became the owner of an estate that was still based on the principles of mezzadria, the medieval system of share-cropping or metayage. There were only four hectares of vineyards that he had convinced the ageing Piccolomini Countess to plant. Since then, in little more than a decade, the estate has been transformed into a winery. Today, Paolo and Lucia Bianchini - the children of the famous winemaker Giuseppe Bianchini, who died in 2004, manage the estate.
Ciacci Piccolomini d’ Aragona now owns three wine cellars.
The historic cellar called Palazzo erected in the XVII century is the place where the most valuable wines are aged. It can be visited by appoitment.
The new cellar Molinello is the estate headquarters with fermentation, ageing and refinement rooms and where the offices and the wine shop take place.
The S. Stefano cellar, a recent acquisition, located in Montenero (Grosseto province) is used only for the production of the Montecucco Sangiovese DOC wine.
Ciacci Piccolomini D'Aragona produces many Montalcino Wines: Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and many other with different grape varietal.
Ateo Sant'Antimo Rosso. In 1989, a difficult year that fell in between two excellent vintages, a wine named ATEO (meaning “atheist”) was created as a consequence only to produce Brunello in less than ideal vintages. This decision coincided with the first harvests from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vineyards.
Fabius Sant'Antimo Rosso is dedicated to Fabius de’ Vecchis, bishop of Montalcino, who in 1672 built the Palazzo which houses the estate’s headquarters and historic cellar. The Grape varietal of this wine is 100% Syrah.
The Montecucco Sangiovese D.O.C. The estate has vineyards and a new cellar near Montenero (Grosseto province), in the designated area for the production of Montecucco DOC.
